Evil is not simply the absence of good, nor is it merely erroneous choice. Evil is revolt, disobedience, resistance. It is a human (and demonic) refusal to carry out God’s purposes in history. It is a deliberate, intentional and violent rejection of God. . . . God’s goal in history, so to speak, is to win back his world by his own two hands—the incarnate Word and the Holy Spirit—and to unite humanity with the community of God. His original creational purpose will be fulfilled at the end of history.
